The temples of South India are usually guarded at the entrance with a Yali or evil crusher, a lion faced animal with sharp teeth, huge claws, and a muscular body. The Yalis are endowed with complete supremacy over the animal world. Thus, while other animals fear one another, the Yali fears none.
