Ever wonder how you fare as a travel blogger?

Recently I designed an online assessment tool on travel blogging for one of the organisations I partner with. It is a simple quiz. 11 questions. But it helps one figure out where one stands. Are you a wannabe, could be, or should be travel blogger?

    • Love your blog, and love your pictures!!! They are gorgeous. I too went to China and your post brought back many lovely memories.

      A few tips, mainly technical, perhaps you may like to incorporate:
      1) Include share and like buttons on your posts in such a way that they also show up on the home page.
      2) Remove the text widgets and social buttons if you have not customised them.
      3) Have a picture of you in the “About” page.
      4) Use the “more” feature on your posts so that the text appears truncated with a “continue reading” link on the home page. That way one would not have to scroll the entire length of your home page to see what all you have written about.
      5) Deselect “uncategorised” as a category on your posts.
      6) Use more tags, coz the latter help with Google Searches. Think what a reader may search for to end up at your page.

        • Hello again, Carla! I used to live in Jo’burg at one time, in Bedfordview. For a long time I was in Botswana. Through your blog, I felt I was back in Suid Afrika. 🙂

          I went through your posts as requested, with a hawk’s eye. 😀 Very nice indeed. Love the way you write. It is well structured, has clarity of thought, and at the same time touches one’s heart. A few tips that I could share with you are:

          1) Create categories to help one know what themes you write on. Right now it is not clear whether it is on travel or long distance relationships or both or something more as well.
          2) You could also create pages later where you introduce your themes, why they are special to you, and have links to your posts which fall under that particular theme.
          3) Use more images. People love to read through visuals.
          4) Move your “Follow me via email” button to the top of the side bar so it is easier for people to follow you. You could also remove the WordPress follow button coz it is a duplication.
          5) Try and make your tags more specific and use spaces when using tags which contain multiple words, just the way they would be typed into the google or firefox search bar to start with.

            I will have to check if creating categories is possible on my theme but that is a great tip.
            My next post is about my engagement shoot so will contain lots of images! And will keep that in mind for posts to follow.
            About the follow buttons, is it not easier for people to use the WordPress button than the email? (I am very new to this 😂)

            • Hello Carla, you are welcome! Categories is a WordPress feature so all themes would support it. With regard to the “follow” button, people just like to know how many others are following you. The 400-odd you have is a great number to start with. Show it off. 🙂

  17. My score was 21 out of 33. The result said- I have the potentials but I am lacking skills and know-how’s. I may not be very patient and good at writing and articulating my blog, but I will try to keep it simple, beautiful and full of pictures and full unique experiences and facts. Do you think people will like my blog?

    • Congratulations on becoming a blogger, Rachel. Blogging is a wonderful way of expressing oneself and connecting with others. It has given me much joy and I am sure it will give you so too.

      I visited your blog this morning. Great writing. There is an easy warm flow to your content. I also love your tag line! Just a couple of suggestions …

      May I suggest you use more images. Blogging is as much a visual language as a written one.

      Secondly, you have travelled quite extensively within the US. Would be great if you could blog about your travels in America. 37 states, 30 national parks, and 5 Caribbean Islands is impressive to say the least. I am sure it would make for fantastic content. America from the eyes of an American. And where possible if you could also include some travel tips, again from a local perspective.

  28. 25 out of 33! As an almost month-old blogger I am quite happy with that result just now.. but i’m not settling for it as I intend to make it as successful as I can. With our main niche being travel and having an amazing jam-packed next 2 years planned of travel, I am sure to provide plenty of energetic writing from all over the world 🙂 Great quiz and thanks for the opportunity to take part.

    • Hello internationalaway, you got a wonderful blog, both visually and textually! I will definitely be referring to your posts for my South American trip which is very much on my bucket list. Suggestions for improvement? Well, you could: 1) Personalise the About page. Would love to know more about you. Right now it is just showing the default page text. 2) Create Categories and put your current posts under South America, so that when you travel more and add posts on other parts of the world, they are easy to find on your blog.

    • Hello, mrstressbuster, just visited your blog on your road trip. Very informative, especially the travel tips, and great visuals. A small suggestion. Perhaps you’d like to consider adding captions to the images in the image gallery. Captions make a place more relatable, and for the reader, are very helpful as they serve as a visual guide. 🙂

    • Your blog is going to work great! I just checked it out. I love the angle you have taken. Poshpacker. Absolutely niche. Whilst everyone talks about backpacking and its related experiences, the fact is not all of us get turned on by backpacking and do relish the odd luxury thrown in. I am a practicing minimalist myself and have been one for most of my life. And finally, your ’25 things about me’ post has inspired me to write a similar one on myself! I don’t think I am half as interesting as you, but what the heck, I am going to give it a shot. 😀

          You asked how you could improve your blog–just a few small suggestions: 1) Try and create categories based on the themes you will be writing on. It helps with navigation within the site. 2) The tag line ‘a blog about travel’ is a bit bland. Maybe you’d like to jazz it up a bit by making it more specific and creative. 3) Use tags. It helps search engines track posts. Good luck. Keep writing. Keep blogging.

    • What a wonderfully unusual blog! I have never read another quite like yours. Travel, training, lifestyle, and mindset. Some suggestions, since you have asked. 🙂

      Please add an “About” page, even though you have talked about yourself in “Old Blog Post – 2 weeks out before an MMA match up..” Your readers, including myself, would love to know more about you. It is there under “author” but an “about” page has higher visibility. Secondly, the social media share buttons need to be updated — facebook, twitter, youtube and google+ are broken. Perhaps, you’d like to consider removing those which are defunct. Lastly, how about changing your categories to the countries you are travelling through. That would help navigation. 🙂 Good luck and happy blogging.

For starters you may consider 1) giving your blog a more descriptive name and tag-line so readers know what the blog is about. 2) Please populate your “About” page, and tell the world a little bit about yourself. 3) Create categories based on the themes you are going to write about. It helps with navigation. 4) Use more images. The claim that an image is worth a thousand words is absolutely true. Good luck and best wishes. 🙂
